12th November 2009

The dominant aspect in the heavens until the New Year is the finale of the Jupiter/Neptune conjunction, and seeing as swine flu isn't ravaging the world just yet, i though I'd have a look at another Neptunian favourite that is being amplified by Jupiter - drugs.  Last year in the UK, no people died of cannabis, five died as a result of ecstacy, thirty died of horse related injuries, thousands died in car accidents, today's UK headline is about how needless anti psychotic drugs for dementia are killing many thousands each year, whilst alcohol and tobacco kill tens of thousands each year.  Guess which ones are illegal?  Personally (and I'm going to get into trouble for this) I'd legalise every drug and within a year or two most all the junkies would be dead, half the crime in the UK would be eradicated, drugs would never be a problem again and the health service, police and society in general would be less stretched.  Of course offer help - but they've got to want to stop, and increasingly the demands of addiction, whether alcohol, drugs, chocolate, religion, food whatever - are bringing issues of self discipline to the fore.  Ah yes, Saturn in Libra squaring Pluto - how could I forget?  Self discipline.....

nice one Steve, oh and don't forget all the lovely taxes the government could charge on all those substances and use for rehab and education...... ( and expenses?) and last but not least legalise prostitution too, lets be practical and realistic, it's been going on for millennia. Do the powers that be really think they can eradicate the sale of sex and drugs? they are determined to control everything else they might as well put them on the list too . Roll on 2012.

The other way to go about it is to invite all the junkies and addicts to, what they think is their personal heaven, and OD them on drugs, alcohol, tobacco non stop until it either kills them or they decide they don't want to indulge any more. Radical I know, but it should produce the same results. Either way, we'll be rid of the dross we don't need in the world, which will be leave those people who DO want to engage with each other.

Hi Steve - While I'm not quite all-encompassing as you when it comes to legalizing drugs I agree with your statement about the junkies and do think the time has come to seriously consider this aspect (in the US too). But the main reason I wanted to write was to say - thanks so much for pitching in for Jonathan Cainer. Your thoughts were refreshing (as usual!). FC - Arizona, USA

Hi Steve, as usual all these things are not black and white. If my 18year old son was buying marijuana or cocaine from Tesco i would feel a lot happier about it than him buying from some sleezebag up a dark alley. Tesco would have an approved standard, would know where it had come from, would have total quality control over the product and would be selling it at a competitive price. Just because Tesco sell cigarettes it doesn't mean i have to smoke and because they sell Gin on special offer this week I don't become a drunk. Tesco provide a dispensary to sell drugs and medicine which the sleezebag can sell as uppers or downers not with any medical design. If my 18 year old is going to do drugs, he is going to get them anyway so I would prefer he bought them from Tesco!

Can you imagine walking into tesco and seeing heroin on the shelf next door to the beans - buy one get one free! It's a stupid idea. And how would you like it if your 18 year old daughter went dancing in a nightclub, which freely sold cocaine and ecstasy together with the alcopops? Makes me shudder.

I love this! I totally agree with Steve. If Tesco sold Heroin, would you buy it? Probably not, it may not be your drug of choice. But at least you would have a choice. If we take the illegal out of things, it takes out the criminal. The hardest drugs I have ever done have been tobacco, alcohol and cannabis. I smoked a lot of cigarettes once, but gave it up. I drank a lot of alcohol, but that was deemed as social drinking, I gave it up. I occasionally smoke cannabis, it helps me sleep, soothes my arthritis, improves my appetite. I am 61. I think the fact that alcohol and tobacco are legal is criminal. The reason is revenue. They are very dangerous drugs. Now lets talk about pharmaceutical drugs...

Its an interesting one...I wonder whether it would all become less desirable if it was all legal...less "cool"...and I wonder if the gov would also mount a huge campaign like the anti smoking one, to try and make people feel like social pariahs...it would be good to have a chance to find out!

Saturn is tough but he sure does give us survival skills. If I'm ever caught in a wilderness situation, it will be Saturn's lessons that will get me through! :)
