A comment yesterday about Britain being a racist country gave me pause for thought.  I live in a country responsible for slavery, torture, genocide and extreme racism in the past.  I am not proud of this.  What I am proud of is living in the most multi cultural society in the world, where black, white, yellow and brown live in relative harmony, where everyone is entitled to free health care regardless of whether you're rich or poor, and where even our policemen have no need to carry guns.  Empires crumble - that's what history tells us, whether it's the Greek, Roman, Ottoman, British or American.  And racism will only exist as long as there is fear and bigotry.  And what is the main perpetrator of fear and bigotry?  Bxxxxy religion, that's what.  My God has got a bigger dxxk than your God.  Do we, as a species, deserve to evolve?  If we can't even treat each other civilly, how can we reach out?  Never in the history of the Earth has the responsibility for the evolution of a species been given to that species.  We are the first ever who can jump with anticipation and predictive safety, but also who can cock it up for ourselves.  Sometimes I despair of humanity, I really do.  It is simply not intelligent to behave towards each other and the planet the way we do.  And i was going to talk about Pluto being on the UK's Sun this year, but I'll leave that until tomorrow.

Just been reading about the American Tea Party movement with great interest. At least people are trying to establish a movement to question the political powers that be..... However I do wonder if the First Nation people are included in this- the true owners of America. Answers please.... Britain sorely needs something like this Tea Party movement...hopefully as a brand new alternative to the Mad Hatters Tea party that is our only political choice between the well educated tones of David Cameron, or the dour boring monologues of Gordon Brown.....The name tea party hardly fires me with inspiration- there must be far better names for new movements... Religion- Steve please don't say derogatory things about other peoples gods, we all have our own religions, and they all more or less lead to the same thing- that there is one creator-, I call him God .Other people may call him something else or not believe in anything , cant we respect each others beliefs? Thats why there's wars because of this lack of respect.....And I know wars are caused because of religion as well, but people are always going to seek some sort of collective spiritual worship/gatherings- even you go to Stonehenge at solstice...

I was thinking quite alot about what I wrote to you yesterday, and I felt as though you were thinking about it too. I lived in London during the 80's and absolutely loved it. I love the Brits for better or worse. I do think you had elevated the world during your conquests. I absolutely believe you had a heartfelt reaction to my rant, and I truly believe you mean what you say precisely because you didn't look to disparage what I said. I do hope and pray that the world will someday treat each other humanely. It is going in that direction, if you consider that only 50 years or so ago, we were not able to communicate with each other the way we can now. Unencumbered by others, who told us what events and people were like via the news media, we can now depend on the internet and modern technology to take us directly to the places and people we never had access to before thereby enabling us to connect and realize we are all the same. We all want to be able to take care of our families and ourselves and keep our dignity and self respect in the process. For those that want to destroy others and themselves, we will outnumber them eventually, and they will be destroyed. We blame religion or govt. whenever we cannot figure out why we are struggling. But if you can believe it or not, humanity struggles, not because of establishments such as religions or governments, but because it is us individually who must make a change. If we could be accountable for our own behavior the world would change too. But we are too busy blaming others. It is a slow but necessary understanding that will lead to this kind of change. The leaders, governments, and religions are just reflections of who we are as individuals. Its a difficult concept but one which we MUST come to realize if any change can ever happen. P.S. as far as free health care in USA. I don't believe anything is this world is free. We just have to figure out how much we are willing to give up to get what other are trying to sell us. So far Barak and the "change" people of america have yet to prove that they are honest and have the best interests of the people in mind. Most people are turning against a 2,000 page memorandum telling us "its what we need now". Lets see if Barak can earn his "Nobel Peace Prize".

Please don't be fooled by what the Tea Party appears to represent. This is a group of fearful, resentful, hateful, ultra-conservative idealogues. For example, they are behind the drive to prove that Obama is not an American citizen. The world doesn't need any more of the hatred they spout.

Dear Steve love your site much We have a lot going for us and we are not about throwing out the baby with the bath water, we are far more intelligent and we have come so far than that. We need to remember this...yes some tranditions need to be questioned and yes there are some which are up for renewal some we need to keep and those we need to question well lets question them...and evolve..

Hello there, I like the idea of a Mad Hatters Tea Party. In fact there will be a Nationwide Mad Hatters Tea Party on the 27th of this month to Celebrate the Fairtrade movement with the idea that people will swap their unfairly traded tea, coffee etc for Fairly traded products. Another way to help the disparities between people, and to pay the producers a living wage. Remember if you cant by Fairtrade, Buy Local. Thank you for your words Steve. Bright blessings to you and all your readers. AnaNanA

I feel very sorry for the person who is under the impression that something has to be given up in order to get a fairer society. Society in the USA is not a fair. Anyone who is poor, non-white, ill or unemployed is marginalised. This isn't freedom, it's slavery in another form. What is so bad that part of your taxes go towards paying for a health service that is free at the point of use? Obama isn't the cause of this friction is the republicans who will not help the ordinary people that are holding back necessary reforms. Land of the free? Don't make me laugh!
